The whole family went to see The Muppet Movie Wednesday night. All the kids, even the teenagers and Nana too. It has been quite sometime since The Muppets made a movie.
In this movie which was written as a labor of love by Jason Segal we meet two brothers. Gary, played by Segal and his brother Walter who is, although not noticed by them a Muppet. Walter is also the worlds greatest fan of all things Muppet.
Gary is to visit Hollywood with his long time girlfriend Mary, played by Amy Adams. A short aside here, is there anyone in the movies today who at least appears cuter and sweeter than Amy Adams. She might be on her way to being this generations Domma Reed. Then I remember that she played the mouthy girlfriend in The Fighter and realize that she has little to worry about as far as being typecast.
Gary and Mary decide to take Walter so they can visit The Muppet Theatre and are shocked to find that it is falling apart with only a dusty tour to prove it was ever a building that housed The Muppets.
Walter after having snuck into Kermit's office while the tour goes on overhears Tex Richman talking about his plan to buy the theatre when The Muppets lease runs out and then drill for the oil discovered under the theatre.
What follows is a montage of gathering up the old gang including a going gray Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy in France. Watch the Muppets travel by map and you will wish that you could.
This movie is sweet. It also feels like it is true to it's origins. Guest Stars abound including Neil Patrick Harris, Dave Grohl, and many others.
My son told his friends he went and told them it was a cute little movie. For a 16 year old to admit this means it must have been.

Junebug
My wife picked this movie up from Netflix based on a reccomendation. It was different. Embeth Davidcz plays Madeline the owner of an independent art gallery who has recently married George Johnsten a Chicago transplant from North Carolina.
When taking a trip to North Carolina to woo an eccentric artists who speaks in biblical rants they decide to take a trip to see his family. His family is not like him, his Mom takes an instant dislike to Madeline, his brother is sullen, and his brothers pregnant wife played by Amy Adams is captivated by both George and his new wife.
Amy Adams makes this movie shine, her character is naive, sweet and too, too, talkative but she bonds with Madeline.
The movie is odd. There are many scenes, sort of intermissions, that show the scenery, or the houses or the empty rooms in between scenes. The movie at times seems to me Faulkner like, with it's Southern themes and clash between the city folks and those from home.
An interesting movie and the ending in a way seems tacked on and some relationships such as between George and his brother remain unresolved and leave us filling in the blanks.
Amy Adams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and this was well deserved. the rest of the cast, and the movie it itself is just odd enough to be interesting for that.

The Fighter
We watched this movie over the weekend. For those of us who remember Mark Wahlberg as Marky Mark it is quite remarkable that he has become a very good actor. I am not sure that he ever strays far from his typical role but that said he is very good at what he does.
In this movie, a biopic based on the life of Mickey Ward and to a lesser extent his half brother Dicky Ward, Wahlberg plays Mickey a down on his luck fighter from hardscrabble Lowell, Massachussets.
A fighter managed and trained by his family he begins to and has reason to doubt the advice and counsel he is getting from his family and his career is in decline. Eventually pairing with a more professional training team he gets a chance, embraces his brother again as his trainer and victory comes.
Amy Adams is stellar in her role, playing against type playing a foul mouthed, big hearted bar tender who falls in love with Mickey and pushes him to distance himself from his family.
Melissa Leo and Christian Bale both won Best Supporting Oscars for their roles as the Ward brothers Mother, and Dicky Ward the crack addicted ex fighter.
You do not have to like boxing to enjoy this movie. This is a winner, a very good movie.

Leap Year
My wife got this movie on Netflix. It was, predictably, my wife's turn to pick the movie. Amy Adams stars as a young woman on the corporate track who has a long term relationship with a surgeon. She expecting a marriage proposal gets a big dinner date...earrings. She is disappointed.
Later when he is in Ireland on a conference, remembering that her grandmother told the story of how she proposed to her grandfather on Leap Day, an allowance to women by tradition on that day she resolves to go to Ireland to do this.
What happens is a series of tragedies of airplanes landing in the wrong towns, getting socked in and then finding a local bar owner to taxi her to Dublin. Trouble ensues and she learns much about herself.
A date night movie for sure but one with Adams who has that uniqueness in that she is cute and attractive but not threatening so everyone enjoys her. My wife enjoyed the movie and after a half hour of keeping track over my book I stopped the pretense and enjoyed it with her.
